Not all women have hearts filled with compassion. Not all men lack compassion. But throughout history, it's been women across all cultures who have attended to the human side. Our roles have always been closer to nature, caring for newborns, planting gardens, and brewing concoctions. Women are the givers and caretakers of what makes life worth living.
The coronavirus is connected to the extinction of species and human contribution to climate change. This emergency is the result of an economic system of limitless growth where GNP is king. Our “business as usual” systematically ignores planetary boundaries, the ecosystem, and species integrity.
Discussing the plight of service workers with my friend, Becky, I shared what I’d learned from Kate Raworth’s book, that the stock market performance did not equate to better circumstances for low-paying employees. Becky wondered aloud (paraphrased), “if the well-paying factory jobs are not returning, how will these people’s well-being improve?”
